On the road with truffles

Most food on the island is imported, and some of the top luxury items come in on Air France. I saw this refrigerated truck being loaded and my eye was caught by the Bocuse name on the side - a name which I'd never heard til I watched the recent Top Chef Bocuse d'Or challenge. I imagine a wonderland of confit duck legs, truffles and morel mushrooms inside...

The weird building behind the truck is the airport's control tower.

Airport Cargo Area

This is a picture of the airport cargo area, where you can come and pick up the thing you desperately need to have and were not able to find on the island - an appliance part, books, whatever.

Flights arrive two or three times a week, and its always interesting to be there on those days - all kinds of interesting items are carted out by workers and shoved onto the back of trucks - fresh flowers and food, computers - last time I was there someone was waiting for his generator - and he had had it flown in instead of shipped by boat! I think he was new. (You get charged by weight on planes, and charged by the cubic foot on boats.)
