Combating the Heat

Two customers standing at a gelateria counter on a sunny day in Philipsburg, St. Maarten

This is a new little gelateria on Frontstreet in Philipsburg. It was so hot that day that you can see vapor from the cold air under the awning.

Basil and Mint

P1250763

Basil and mint both grow well here. This picture is from a while ago and was my most successful attempt at growing them for use in cooking. It was beautiful while it lasted - the plants succumbed soon enough to a mysterious malady.

Cappuccino and Croissant

Cappucino and croissant breakfast, with a view of the Simpson Bay Lagoon

A nice way to start the day.

Taken at La Sucrière on the Simpson Bay Lagoon.

A Tropical Pizzeria

I love the look of Mama Pizza in Oyster Pond. They have good food too.

It's Melon Time!

cutting a Guadeloupe melon

I went into the Fresh Market the other day and could smell these Guadeloupe melons right away - they have an amazing scent when they are ripe. I am not a huge fan of melon but maybe that is because I have never eaten any that were properly ripe?

Dinner in the Marina

On the road with truffles

P1260900

Most food on the island is imported, and some of the top luxury items come in on Air France. I saw this refrigerated truck being loaded and my eye was caught by the Bocuse name on the side - a name which I'd never heard til I watched the recent Top Chef Bocuse d'Or challenge. I imagine a wonderland of confit duck legs, truffles and morel mushrooms inside...

The weird building behind the truck is the airport's control tower.
