Marigot's Marina Royale

P1400645

This summer I went to Marigot a few times and noticed that security at the Marina Royale has been beefed up. There were lockable gates at the entrances and security guards wandering around. It must be a boon for the restaurants there - we had a lovely dinner one night at Tropicana - but it is also a little sad to see charming Marigot fallen on hard times.

Closed But Still Pretty

I love the whimsical iron window bars at this Marigot restaurant - I hope the next business at this spot will keep them.

Lots of View

Lots of things to look at stuffed into one picture!

This was taken from the 6th floor of a building in Cupecoy. The roofless buildings in the foreground are apartment buildings that were messed up in Hurricane Luis in 1995. They have been empty since, I think because they are part of a land parcel that includes Atlantis Casino, and the land cannot be divided. So, anyone who buys the land to redo the apartments must also buy the casino and license etc. The casino group seemed to have plans to develop that whole parcel into a condo resort but that was at the end of the housing boom here and the plans seem to have been shelved.

The large building to the right with the red roof is the American University of the Caribbean. The empty apartments would have been perfect housing for them, but empty are just a nice ambush spot for walking students. A forest of other apartment buildings were built nearby.

Behind that is the lagoon, in this picture with darker water, and then the strip of land that is Nettle Bay. On that is the Hotel Mercure, some restaurants and perhaps some condos, I have never explored all of it.

The distant water is the bay where the cruise ship from Speed 2 was filmed crashing into the land, framed by the town of Marigot.
